Tom Griffin was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois. He lived in Chicago for 10 years where he attended dental school at Northwestern University and went on to become a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago. He and his wife Elizabeth moved to North Carolina in 1991 so that he could complete residency as an orthodontist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
